Is there a grace period when a first aid certificate expires?

HSE sets no grace period. It says a First Aid at Work certificate lasts three years and that once it has expired the first aider is no longer considered competent to act as a workplace first aider. Whether someone can still take the shorter two day requalification course after expiry is up to the awarding body: Qualsafe allows it with a current or recently expired certificate, and if it expired more than a month before the course the centre must warn the learner or employer first.

In short
  • HSE says First Aid at Work certificates last three years.
  • Once a certificate has expired, HSE no longer considers the person competent to act as a workplace first aider.
  • HSE says first aiders need to requalify before their certificates expire, and strongly recommends annual refresher training.
  • Qualsafe allows the two day requalification with a current or recently expired certificate, with a warning if it expired more than a month before.
  • Other awarding bodies publish their own rules, so check the specification for the qualification you deliver.

What does HSE say?

HSE's guidance on first aiders says that certificates for first aid at work last for three years, and that before their certificates expire, first aiders will need to take a requalification course to get another three year certificate. It also says that once certificates have expired, the first aider is no longer considered to be competent to act as a workplace first aider.

The page does not mention a grace period. It also strongly recommends that first aiders take annual refresher training in between, which keeps their skills fresh during the three years.

So for an employer the date on the certificate is what matters. From the day after it, that person should not be counted in your first aid cover until they have requalified.

Can someone requalify after the certificate expires?

That is a separate question, and the answer comes from the awarding body, not from HSE.

Qualsafe's First Aid at Work specification (version 11, March 2026) allows the 12 hour, two day requalification course for a learner who shows a current or recently expired First Aid at Work certificate. If the certificate expired more than one month before the course, the centre must warn the learner or their employer in advance that the course is shorter, that the risk of failing is higher, and that HSE suggests the full three day course.

So with Qualsafe there is no fixed cut off for the shorter course, but there is a clear point, one month after expiry, where the centre has to warn before going ahead. Either way, the person is not a qualified first aider between the expiry date and passing the new course.

What is not known

Qualsafe's specification is the only awarding body position we have checked against its own document. Other awarding organisations deliver First Aid at Work too, and each publishes its own qualification specification. We have not confirmed what each of them says about expired certificates, so we do not state their rules here.

That gap is one reason answers online disagree. Many mix up two questions: how long the certificate is valid, which HSE puts at three years, and whether the shorter requalification course is still open after that, which depends on the awarding body. If you deliver or book first aid with another awarding body, read that body's specification or ask the centre which rules it follows.

How should a training provider handle it?

Book requalification before the certificate expires, and make the system do the remembering. In our live training provider demo at training-demo.varsuite.co.uk, the grace period is a setting for each awarding body, and the default is none. A First Aid at Work requalification booked for a delegate whose certificate has already expired is refused, and an override needs a reason that is written to the audit trail.

The renewals engine reminds the delegate and their employer 90, 60 and 30 days before a certificate expires and nudges first aiders about the annual refresher, so fewer people reach the expiry date at all. The rest of the system is on our training provider software page, and the validity of other common certificates is in our answer on how long construction training certificates last. This is not legal or compliance advice.

Follow-up questions

Is there a 28 day grace period for first aid certificates?

Not from HSE, whose guidance mentions no grace period and says an expired first aider is no longer considered competent. The shorter requalification course is a separate matter for the awarding body: Qualsafe allows it with a recently expired certificate and requires a warning once it is more than a month.

Can I still do the two day requalification if my certificate expired last week?

With Qualsafe, it allows the two day course with a recently expired certificate, and the centre must warn you in advance if it expired more than a month before the course. With another awarding body, ask the centre which rules apply. Until you pass, you are not a qualified first aider.

How often should first aiders do a refresher?

HSE strongly recommends annual refresher training, alongside requalifying every three years before the certificate expires.

Does Emergency First Aid at Work work the same way?

Qualsafe's Emergency First Aid at Work specification also gives three years. Check the awarding body's specification for what happens after it expires.
