What is an SSL certificate, and does your website need one?
SSL certificates encrypt data between browsers and servers. They are essential for trust and SEO. Here's what they protect, what they don't, and why browsers punish sites without them.
An SSL certificate is a digital file that encrypts data sent between a user's browser and your website's server, ensuring that information like passwords, payment details, and personal data cannot be intercepted by third parties. Virtually every website needs one, because modern browsers mark any site without SSL as "Not Secure", which drives visitors away and damages your search engine rankings. In short, if you operate a website that collects any data, accepts payments, or wants to rank on Google, an SSL certificate is non-negotiable.
What does an SSL certificate actually protect?
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer, now mostly replaced by TLS, Transport Layer Security) scrambles data in transit. When you visit a site with SSL, the padlock icon appears in the address bar, and the connection uses HTTPS instead of HTTP. This encryption prevents hackers from reading or tampering with information exchanged between the visitor's device and your server.
Practically, this means the following are protected:
- Login credentials (usernames and passwords)
- Contact form submissions (names, emails, phone numbers)
- Payment card details during checkout
- Personal data like addresses or dates of birth

Without SSL, any data sent over HTTP is transmitted in plain text. On an unsecured Wi-Fi network, a malicious actor can easily eavesdrop and steal that information. That is why browsers now display a visible warning on every HTTP site.
What does an SSL certificate NOT protect?
It is important to understand the limits. An SSL certificate does not protect your website from malware, hacking attempts, or data breaches on your server. It only secures the connection, not the server itself. For example, if your site has a vulnerable plugin or weak passwords, SSL will not stop an attacker from breaking in.
It also does not verify that the website owner is trustworthy. A free SSL certificate only confirms that the connection is encrypted, not that the business behind the site is legitimate. Extended Validation (EV) certificates, which require more vetting, offer some identity verification, but they are rare for small sites these days.
So think of SSL as a lock on the door, but not a security alarm or a safe. You still need good hosting, regular updates, and strong passwords. Why do browsers punish sites without SSL?
In 2018, Google Chrome began marking all HTTP sites as "Not Secure". Since then, other browsers followed suit. A visitor sees the warning and often leaves immediately, increasing your bounce rate.
